Believe it or not, a survey by Triumph found that 80% of women are actually wearing the WRONG bra size.

In the study, 70% of the women were revealed to be wearing a size lower than their current measurement, while the remaining 10% wore a size larger than their true bra size. Unfortunately, this large number can be attributed to the fact many lingerie brands still don’t carry smaller or larger bra sizes in their stores.

While bra size availability is a bit out of the consumers’ hands, there’s another factor that contributes to this survey. Many women actually don’t know how to properly measure bra size. This might be surprising for ladies, but many actually are actually confused.

So now, you have probably started to wonder “What bra size am I?”

To help you quickly and accurately measure your bra size, here’s a simple step-by-step guide that you can do at home.

  1. Measure your band size

Band size is the measurement of the torso right below the breasts. To measure the band size:

  • Get a tape measure and snuggly wrap it around the torso, just directly under the breasts.
  • Make sure that there’s space between the tape measure and the back. It should be at least two fingers wide.
  • Take note of the measurement.
  1. Next, measure your bust size

Bust size is the measurement from the breasts to the back, To properly measure the bust size:

  • Wrap a tape measure around the torso and place it at the fullest part of the breast. Don’t wrap it too tight or too loose.
  • Make sure the tape measure is straight at the back so that the measurement is accurate. 
  • Jot down the measurement.
  1. Lastly, calculate your cup size
  • Simply subtract the band size with the bust size and that should give the cup size.

Quick Tips:

  • If the bra straps are too tight on the shoulders, that means the band size isn’t doing its fair share of lifting the breasts. To solve this, try a bra that’s one band size lower.
  • If the breasts are tight or overflowing on the top or side of the bra, adjust the cup size by a size larger.

  • Overtime, bras will stretch and ladies would have to use the second and third hooks eventually.

But bra sizes are not standard

The thing is, there’s actually no right or wrong when it comes to bra sizes, since there’s actually no standard for it. There are actually a lot of factors for this including different brands using different bra sizing systems, the kind of bra worn (e.g. a 32A push-up bra would have a different fit from a regular 32A bra), and the measurement system used by the fitter.

Then, is there a definable ‘right’ metric for bra sizes? Maureen O’ Connor from The Cut says that as long as it looks and feels good for you, then that’s fine. O’ Connor reminds ladies that a bra is just a value-neutral apparel that can be easily replaced, hidden, or celebrated however you would like.

Remember that the ‘right’ bra size is one that fits and makes you feel good.
